The practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine in the Czech Republic

This Bachelor thesis deals with the description of the situation of Traditional Chinese Medicine in the Czech Republic. Therefore it is not based on specialised literature only, but primarily on a questionnaire research and personal interviews with therapists of Chinese Medicine. In order to enhance the validity of the study, the research was conducted between four differently interested groups. The sample of respondents was divided into therapists, physicians, clients of Chinese Medicine and patients of Western Medicine. Another important source of information was the media. The turning point for Chinese Medicine in the Czech Republic is represented in the socio-political revolution in the 1990s. The revolution enabled the development of Chinese Medicine which continues up to the present. This thesis describes the current situation of the field and looks at options for studying Chinese Medicine, public interest in the treatment, and critique from defenders of Western Medicine who wish to preserve and develop only the scientific way of healing. The Role of the Duli pinglun Magazine in the Chinese Medicine Controversies

This Master's thesis focuses on the discussion about Chinese and Western Medicine in the Duli pinglun Magazine (獨立評論) in the year of 1934. Its main purpose is to introduce the lines of reasoning of its participants. The thesis introduces general historical and philosophical background crucial for the formation of the discussion about Chinese and Wester Medicine in 1930s. It describes the situation of Chinese medicine in China from the late imperial period to so called Nanjing Decade (1928-1937). It describes the discussion in the context of the intellectual discussion about social Darwinism, national essence, cultural iconoclasm and science and scientism. It introduces selected basic characteristics of Chinese Medicine crucial for the understanding of this discussion. The main actor of the discussion, Fu Sinian 傅斯年 (1896-1950), and the Duli pinglun Magazine itself are introduced here. The thesis focuses also on the first phase of the discussion, which was held in the Da gongbao Magazine 大公報. Main intellectual tendencies of the discussion about Chinese and Wester Medicine during this period were revealed through the analysis of the discussion. The aim of this thesis is to present a commented translation of two chapters from the book Les médecines différentes. The thesis has two main parts: the translation itself and the commentary which further consists of an analysis of the source text and a discussion of translation problems, supported with examples from the target text. It also provides explanations about the methods used during the translation process.

The bachelor's work concerns with flowers used by traditional Chinese medicine, which can be also grown in Czech republic. There are botanically described 25 species of plants. For all species, except Adenophora tetraphylla and Rhododendron molle, were proved antioxidant effects of drug. Availability of the plants in the form of seeds and seedlings and their location in botanical gardens of Czech republic is also added. Hereafter are mentioned 28 species of flowers, that belong to traditional Chinese medicine that can be found in Czech republic. A list of species, that belong to traditional Chinese medicine and are in experimental garden ZF MENDELU and a list of other flower species, which could be located here in the future, are also included.
